How to Build Credit From Scratch
Starter and secured cards, on-time payments, and patience.
With no credit history, a secured card or a starter/student card is usually the entry point. Secured cards use a refundable deposit that typically sets your limit, and they report your activity to the credit bureaus.
The habits that matter
Two behaviors drive early credit growth: paying on time, every time, and keeping your balance low relative to your limit (utilization). Automating at least the minimum payment helps avoid missed due dates.
Graduating up
After several months of responsible use, many issuers review your account for a higher limit or a move to an unsecured card. Building credit is a slow, steady process — there is no shortcut worth the risk.
